United Way of Central Iowa Leads Volunteer Effort to Strengthen our Community

United Way of Central Iowa’s annual Day of Action brought together more than 800 volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to support 17 local organizations through nearly 50 hands-on service projects across the region.
As the largest single-day volunteer event in central Iowa, Day of Action continues to be a powerful demonstration of community spirit and collaboration.
“Day of Action is more than a volunteer event, it’s a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when compassion, purpose, and community come together to create lasting impact,” said Mary Sellers, President of United Way of Central Iowa. “It’s a meaningful opportunity for individuals and corporate partners to connect with our community’s needs and take action. The support this day provides to our nonprofit and school partners is truly invaluable.”
Volunteers tackled a wide range of projects, from reading with elementary students to revitalizing nonprofit facilities and enhancing outdoor spaces. Each activity was aligned with United Way of Central Iowa’s UNITED to THRIVE framework, which focuses on addressing the core elements that give every central Iowan the opportunity to thrive.
The collective effort generated an estimated economic impact of more than $74,151, directly benefiting local nonprofits and the people they serve.
“Volunteers are the heartbeat of this event,” said Joy Talmon, Volunteer Engagement Officer at United Way of Central Iowa. “Their time and energy help expand the reach of our nonprofit partners, allowing them to serve more people and strengthen our community. We hope this day inspires continued engagement throughout the year.”
With opportunities for groups of varying sizes, interests, and skill sets, volunteers were able to choose projects that aligned with their passions. See volunteers in action.
“Thanks to the commitment of our volunteers and the support of our corporate and nonprofit partners, we’ve taken another big step toward our mission of improving lives by uniting the caring power of our community,” added Sellers.
