I am a board member of Everybody Wins! Iowa. We are a mentoring nonprofit that works with underprivileged kids in city schools by reading with them. The organization actually started in New York City about 30 years ago. It was brought to Iowa 20 years ago by former Senator Tom Harkin. This is my first year as a board member. I'm a mentor at Carver, and I'm going to be the treasurer next fiscal year.

Everyone is welcome in this group. We would love to have more diversity and people of color on the board and as mentors or volunteers. If we could get our organization to look more like the population that we serve, that would be awesome. We always have a need, we serve more schools than just in Des Moines. We're very broad but we can always use the help.

It’s an opportunity for anyone to know that when you read with a child, everyone wins. We really appreciate the support we get from United Way of Central Iowa.
