Where Consistency and Connection Continue After the Bell

For many students, the school day does not end when the final bell rings. In fact, some of the most meaningful learning and relationship building happens in the hours after school.
Across Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS), after school and extended learning programs provide students with safe, structured environments where they can build skills, receive academic support, and form relationships with trusted adults. United Way of Central Iowa funded partners, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, ICOACH, and Perry P.A.C.E.S., help ensure students are supported during a critical part of the day.
“Consistency is powerful,” said Kate Bennett, Community Impact Officer at United Way of Central Iowa. “When students know there is a place they can go after school where they feel supported and encouraged, it strengthens their connection to learning overall.”
These programs do more than fill time. They offer mentoring relationships, enrichment opportunities, and stability for students who may not otherwise have access to those resources.
“As mentors, we see the difference these relationships make,” said Lila Siglin, Perry P.A.C.E.S. Director. “When students feel supported outside of school, they bring that confidence and sense of belonging back into the classroom.”
United Way of Central Iowa invests in after school supports because engagement does not stop at the school door. Over time, consistent relationships and structure beyond the classroom help students stay motivated and on track toward graduation.
