Support Available: United Way Urges Central Iowans to Call 211 Amid Government Shutdown

Oct 1, 2025211

As the federal government officially enters a shutdown, United Way of Central Iowa is urging those individuals and families impacted across our region to call 211 for 24/7 support. With potential disruptions to federal services and assistance programs, 211 remains a vital resource to connect central Iowans to the help they need.

The shutdown, which began at midnight on October 1, is expected to affect hundreds of thousands of federal workers nationwide, including nearly 7,000 in central Iowa. If disruptions to programs such as food assistance, housing support and health care access emerge, United Way of Central Iowa underscores that 211 is a trusted, always-available helpline to ensure Iowans can quickly find and connect with community resources.

“We know that when the government shuts down, the ripple effects are felt most deeply by those already living paycheck to paycheck,” said Mary Sellers, President of United Way of Central Iowa. “This moment calls for a united response, and we’re here to provide the guidance and resources our community can count on.”

United Way of Central Iowa encourages anyone impacted by the shutdown to call 211, a free and confidential helpline available 24/7. Trained specialists are available in English and Spanish, and interpretation for other languages is accessible through Language Line. Callers can also reach 211 via text, the 211 app, or the website, providing multiple ways to connect. Specialists can connect callers to local resources including:

    • Emergency food and housing assistance
    • Utility support and financial aid
    • Mental health and crisis counseling
    • Childcare and transportation resources
    • Information on navigating disrupted federal services
“211 is a lifeline during times of crisis,” Sellers added. “Whether you’re a furloughed worker, a veteran or a parent worried about feeding your children, we’re here to help you find the support you need.”

United Way of Central Iowa continues to work closely with nonprofit partners, local agencies and community leaders to monitor the evolving situation and advocate for solutions that protect the well-being of all central Iowans.
