Grounds for Change: Empowering Childcare Educators to Build a Better System

Thanks to support from the National Fund Childcare Grant and the Central Iowa Childcare Business Solutions Initiative, United Way of Central Iowa, in collaboration with its donor affinity group Women United, is making a meaningful impact on local childcare centers. Together, we’re helping centers strengthen their operations, support their dedicated staff, and build better futures for children and families across our community.
This work reflects a shared commitment to advancing Early Childhood Success in our community—because when our youngest central Iowans thrive, our entire community benefits.
We spoke with over 100 educators and directors to understand their daily challenges. One unexpected theme emerged: many centers didn’t even have a coffee maker. It may seem small, but this detail spoke volumes. A coffee maker isn’t just about caffeine—it’s about feeling seen, valued, and supported.
So, we responded, and not just with coffee makers. We provided a range of meaningful support designed to empower early childhood professionals and strengthen their programs, including:
-
- Onboarding and professional development to help staff grow and thrive.
- Financial and Human Resources consultations for operational stability.
- Recognition kits and peer mentorship to foster connection and appreciation.
- Website development and business tools to enhance visibility and efficiency.
- Childcare assistance navigation to support families and increase access.
These small, thoughtful changes are already making a big impact. Directors are building stronger teams. Educators feel more appreciated. And centers are becoming more resilient and connected.
This initiative is about more than programs; it’s about people. It’s about recognizing that small, human-centered actions can shift culture, improve retention, and lay the foundation for lasting positive change.
