For more than two decades, Don and Mary Coffin have demonstrated what it means to lead through service, generosity, and a commitment to community. In recognition of their lasting impact, United Way of Central Iowa named the couple the recipients of the 2026 Tocqueville Society Award during the annual Tocqueville Society Celebration on September 30, 2026.

The Tocqueville Society Award is one of United Way of Central Iowa's highest honors, presented annually to individuals whose leadership, philanthropy, and dedication have helped strengthen central Iowa and advance the organization's mission.

The Coffins have been dedicated supporters of United Way of Central Iowa for more than 20 years, contributing their time, talents, and resources in countless ways. Their involvement has included serving as campaign leaders, volunteer callers, Tocqueville Society champions, Board leaders, advocates, and Campaign Co-Chairs for the 2022 United Way Campaign.

That campaign raised more than $22.5 million through volunteer engagement, CEO outreach, and community leadership, helping support programs and services that improve lives across central Iowa.

"Don and Mary represent the very best of what the Tocqueville Society stands for," said Mary Sellers, President of United Way of Central Iowa. "Throughout remarkable careers in business and community leadership, they have consistently used their influence, expertise, and generosity to create opportunities for others. Their impact on United Way of Central Iowa, and on our community, extends far beyond their own giving."

In addition to their financial support, the Coffins have dedicated years of volunteer leadership to United Way of Central Iowa. Don has served as a Campaign Volunteer Caller, Workplace Segment Chair, Campaign Cabinet member, Campaign Chair, Tocqueville Campaign Caller, and member of the Board of Directors. Mary has been a longtime Women United member and has served as a Tocqueville Campaign Committee member and champion.

Their commitment to community extends well beyond United Way. Don recently retired as President and CEO of Bankers Trust after nearly 20 years with the organization, including eight years as CEO. Mary retired from Wells Fargo following a 21-year career in senior leadership roles. Together, they have shared their expertise and leadership with numerous organizations throughout the region, helping strengthen opportunities and quality of life across central Iowa.

Their impact will continue well into the future through an endowed Tocqueville Society gift, reflecting their belief in the long-term strength and success of the community they call home.

"Don and Mary have led by example throughout their careers, demonstrating the power of generosity, service, and community leadership," said Monica Friedman, Board Chair of United Way of Central Iowa. "Their impact extends far beyond their own contributions because they have inspired others to become involved, give back, and help build a stronger community."

The celebration also recognized the collective impact of Tocqueville Society members, whose leadership investments continue to create meaningful change across central Iowa. The Tocqueville Society recognizes philanthropists who contribute $10,000 or more annually to support United Way of Central Iowa's mission of mobilizing the community so all central Iowans can thrive.
