Students are more likely to succeed when they feel seen, valued, and understood. Cultural and identity affirming programs create spaces where students can explore identity, build confidence, and strengthen engagement.

United Way of Central Iowa funded partners, including Association of Youth Development and Enrichment (AYDE), Jewels Academy, and Isiserettes Drill and Drum Corps, provide culturally responsive environments that support belonging and persistence.

“Belonging matters,” said Kate Bennett, Community Impact Officer at United Way of Central Iowa. “Students stay engaged when their identities and experiences are respected and reflected.”

Cory Williams, Lead Drum Instructor with the Isiserettes, noted, “When young people feel proud of who they are, it shows up in their confidence, attendance, and willingness to keep going.”

United Way invests in identity affirming supports because graduation is not only academic. It is personal. Feeling connected can make the difference between disengaging and staying on track.
