Book Buddy

Helping preschoolers in central Iowa build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

Book Buddy Empowers Preschoolers Through One-on-One Reading Support

Book Buddy pairs caring adult volunteers with preschoolers for regular, one-on-one reading sessions that boost pre-reading skills and confidence—paving the way for kindergarten readiness. With a curriculum developed in partnership with Des Moines Public Schools, volunteers guide children through engaging books and literacy activities. Weekly sessions create impactful learning moments, helping children in central Iowa build foundational skills, grow family literacy, and start kindergarten ready to learn. Join us to make a difference!

Book Buddy Locations

All Book Buddy sessions occur between 9-10 a.m., for 30 minutes. Exact times will be communicated as they are confirmed by each location.

Some volunteers read every week; others alternate weeks with another volunteer to accommodate busy schedules. Volunteers will need to notify the center staff of any planned absences.
