United Way of Central Iowa has appointed Rubén Vázquez as the organization’s first Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Officer.

United Way of Central Iowa has been awarded nearly $1.8 million as one of 32 Good Jobs Challenge grantees, part of a $500 million investment nationwide.

United Way of Central Iowa Board of Directors is pleased to announce the addition of seven members, who began their two-year term on July 1, 2022.

A United Way of Central Iowa OpportUNITY initiative helps ensure anyone 18 and under in our community continues to not only receive food, but nutritious food when they’re not in school.

Over 32,000 books will be donated to central Iowa kids from United Way of Central Iowa’s annual Stuff the Bus Book Drive.

The Macomber endowment, a generous gift that will continue year-after-year, will help United Way of Central Iowa foster an equitable, engaged, and empowered community now and in the future.  

At this year’s LIVE UNITED event, the organization shared community needs under its strategic imperative, UNITED to THRIVE, and recognized organizations and individuals doing exceptional work in the areas of giving, advocating, and volunteering. Athene receives Spirit of Central Iowa Award for the fourth time.

In mid-September 2020, Rev. Jonathan Whitfield arrived late to a meeting. The group gathered, representing fellow members of the faith community and social service organizations, had been meeting weekly to discuss creating a new initiative to encourage COVID-19 vaccinations among underserved populations and communities of color in Polk County. The pastor sat solemnly for a few minutes listening to the other members tick-off agenda items, and then shared his story.
