Iowans have long called for a unified system to ensure consistent services for all families. Sustainable funding would provide timely, appropriate care, preventing future issues.

A funded system includes services at every level, as shown in the pyramid graphic to the right. To build a healthy workforce and economy, Iowa’s healthcare system must prioritize mental health, with a focus on children’s early intervention and prevention.

Adequate, sustainable funding for Iowa’s Children’s Mental Health System is crucial for long-term recovery and future resilience.

The pandemic has strained families, leading to increased stress, isolation, and mental health challenges. From April to October 2020, pediatric emergency visits for mental health issues rose 24% for children aged 5-11 and 31% for those aged 12-17. Iowa Poison Control reported a rise in suicide attempts among girls aged 11-14.

Children have unique needs, and their early years are critical for emotional and cognitive development. Early intervention helps prevent future mental health issues and builds a foundation for lifelong well-being. Iowa must invest in a unified system to address these needs and build a healthier, stronger workforce.

Investing in a fully funded Children’s Mental Health System now will reduce long-term costs in healthcare, child welfare, and lost productivity. Iowans must choose to invest in children’s mental health for the future of our communities and economy.
