Literacy Kits
Empower Young Readers: Join United Way in Building Literacy Kits for Central Iowa Children
United Way of Central Iowa is dedicated to enhancing early grade reading proficiency across Polk, Warren, and Dallas counties, and volunteers are a vital part of this mission. By building Literacy Kits, volunteers help preschool to elementary-aged children develop reading skills through interactive activities that make reading engaging and fun.

What is a Literacy Kit?
Literacy Kits are designed by a team of literacy experts to bring books to life for children, reinforcing literacy skills through fun activities.
- A carefully selected children’s book.
- Interactive, imaginative activities related to the book.
- Instructions for the volunteer or mentor on how to use the kit.
- A personal note of encouragement from the kit-building volunteer to the child.
They can be used one-on-one or in small groups at schools, after-school programs, childcare centers, or even in the home, helping children expand their reading experience and build a home library.
Benefits of Building Literacy Kits
Volunteering to assemble Literacy Kits provides employees with a meaningful team-building experience, a chance to connect with coworkers, and the satisfaction of making a difference.
Volunteers often report that this project is an uplifting break in their day and that they feel fulfilled knowing they’ve contributed to improving children’s literacy skills.
Through your efforts, you’re helping address the critical issue that one in three central Iowa kids can't read proficiently by the end of third grade—children who are four times more likely to drop out of school. By building Literacy Kits, your team plays a part in shaping a brighter future for these children and our community.
Cost of Building Literacy Kits
A donation of $8 per kit covers materials, books, and staff support. Your organization can select the number of kits to sponsor. Typically, each volunteer can complete two kits per hour.
