On Tuesday, September 12, United Way of Central Iowa will host its annual Day of Action, our community’s biggest day of volunteer service. Approximately 4,500 volunteers from 43 local companies will fan across the community, working on volunteer projects that will benefit 26 area nonprofits.

159 Day of Action projects will occur throughout central Iowa from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Projects include working on literacy skills with third grade students, helping adults prepare for job interviews, mentoring children and youth, and assisting refugees with a citizen class.

United Way's Read to Succeed component will engage more than 750 volunteers at 15 schools and send 3,000 books home with students.

Over the past 24 years, United Way of Central Iowa has organized this massive, one-day volunteer event involving dozens of companies and thousands of employees—to promote employee engagement, raise awareness about community issues, and benefit central Iowans who need our help.

Employer representatives select from more than 100 projects from United Way of Central Iowa partner organizations and employees sign up for company-designated projects that match their talents and interests. All of the Day of Action projects move toward the community’s Goals for 2020 in Education, Income, and Health.

Research shows that providing employees with volunteer opportunities helps attract top talent, engage and retain employees as well as boost public image and improve company moral.
