United Way of Central Iowa’s holiday wish: To share more about the tale of two holidays for the kids who live here. One where the season is full of joy and excitement – with fun traditions of playing games, eating warm healthy meals, unwrapping special gifts, and being surrounded by a loving family who read books with them. The other where sitting by a warm fire in a safe home with parents who are able to buy toys and books is only a dream.

Mirrors and windows: How kids see the world through books

This post was originally published on March 19, 2019, but was updated on March 12, 2024 to include our most recent information about United Way of Central Iowa's annual Stuff the Bus book drive, sponsored by Athene USA and EY. 

The books we read as children do more than sweep us off to sleep at bedtime, teach us our letters, and help prepare us for school. 

They also serve as mirrors as we learn who we are and windows as we discover the outside world. Through books, we see both inside and out.
