The Partnership
Building Stronger Communities
United Way of Central Iowa and labor unions, building on the strong alliance between the AFL-CIO and United Way Worldwide, collaborate to address the workforce needs of our community. Together with the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, we share a proud tradition of tackling critical challenges and guiding central Iowans toward stable careers and brighter futures.

Working Together
Since the 1940s, this collaboration has been formalized through partnership agreements, with the latest Memorandum of Understanding signed on March 28, 2024. Over the years, our joint efforts have significantly improved the well-being of central Iowans, achieving notable milestones.
- Workforce Readiness
- United Way of Central Iowa and the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, collaborate to equip central Iowans with workforce skills. Unions offer cutting-edge training for high-paying careers, while United Way links individuals to these opportunities.
- When the Paycheck Stops
- Inspired by the AFL-CIO’s When the Paycheck Stops, a video series was created to share resources for central Iowa families facing strikes, layoffs, plant closures, or government shutdowns. A Spanish-language version was also produced to improve accessibility.
- Wayfinders Destination Skilled Trades Event
- A partnership between central Iowa building trades and United Way of Central Iowa provided 80 students and bilingual liaisons from Hoover and North High Schools with transportation, meals, and access to apprenticeship programs with local trade unions.
- Childcare Toy Donation
- The South Central Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, and United Way of Central Iowa donated 200 union-made toys and birthday cards to two childcare centers, ensuring year-round celebrations. This initiative showcases their commitment to families and sets the stage for broader outreach.
-
