Wells Fargo & Company announced that its central Iowa team members pledged $2.9 million to nonprofit organizations and schools through its annual Community Support and United Way Campaign.

Corporate matching contributions and gifts will bring the total for Des Moines to $4.3 million, a 14 percent increase from 2008. Team members participating in the campaign represented all the company’s business lines, including Wells Fargo Financial, Home Mortgage, Regional Banking, Card Services and Consumer Lending and other groups.

“During these difficult economic times, it’s more important now than ever for companies and their team members to give back to their communities to help create economic growth and prosperity,” said Scott Johnson, president of Wells Fargo Regional Banking in Iowa and Illinois. “I continue to be amazed by the incredible dedication and compassion our team shows by generously investing their time, energy, and personal financial resources in our communities. That is the spirit of our culture and our vision and values.”

Companywide, team members donated $41.9 million to more than 25,000 nonprofits and schools through the campaign, which was a 21 percent increase over the combined Wells Fargo and Wachovia campaigns last year. Overall, more than 160,000 team members nationwide and 6,000 team members in Des Moines participated in the campaign in some way.

In Des Moines, $3.1 million of the $4.3 million raised during the campaign will come to United Way of Central Iowa.

“United Way commends and thanks Wells Fargo for their support, both through financial contributions and volunteer service.” said United Way of Central Iowa President Shannon Cofield. “Their commitment and generosity earned Wells Fargo the Spirit of Central Iowa award earlier this year, United Way’s highest honor for a single company. Wells Fargo team members truly Live United and advance our mission to improve lives by uniting the caring power of our community.”
