Reach Out To Dropouts September 22
Last year 624 central Iowa high school students dropped out. They're on a path to earn $648,000 less over the course of a lifetime. Combined with the societal cost of dropping out, every dropout represents a million dollar problem.
That is, unless you reach out to them and show them a better path.
The fourth annual Reach Out to Dropouts event is Saturday, September 22, 9 a.m. to noon, at each of the Des Moines public high schools. All it takes is one hour of training on Thursday, September 13. Sign up to be on a team of volunteers from the community and Des Moines Public Schools. Together, you'll follow up with dropouts who have received phone calls so they can reenroll and graduate from high school.
In its first three years of Reach Out to Dropouts, volunteers have visited 1,261 homes, encouraging 53 youth to return to school. Helping even one youth return is worth the effort. Reaching this number of students is a great success.
