Stuff the Bus 2012

United Way of Central Women’s Leadership Connection (WLC) and 31 local companies collected 20,000 children’s books in the third annual “Stuff the Bus” drive.

That’s four times as many books as were collected last year, and double the goal of 10,000 books—filling a full-size Des Moines school bus to overflowing.

The new and gently used children’s books are being distributed by UPS volunteers to WLC-sponsored early learning centers and in-home providers throughout central Iowa. The books were collected at a May 11 event at Aviva USA in honor of National Children’s Book Week.

Access to books is essential to reading development: the only variable that directly correlates with reading scores is the number of books in the home. Families living in poverty often lack the money to buy new books, as well as access to libraries. In fact, 61% of low-income families have no children's books in their homes, according to the national program Reach Out and Read.
