Stuff the Bus collects 5,000 books
United Way Women’s Leadership Connection (WLC) THANKS the central Iowans who donated over 5,000 children’s books in the second annual Stuff the Bus book drive. That’s twice the number of books donated in 2010.
Stuff the Bus is held during National Children’s Book Week. WLC members will contribute the books to central Iowa early learning centers and home providers.
“The key to children’s early success is access to age-appropriate books,” says United Way president Shannon Cofield. “The most recent data indicates that children in middle-income neighborhoods have a ratio of 13 books to 1 child. In low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 book to 300 children. Over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books.”
WLC’s 500 plus members focus their contributions, volunteer service and advocacy efforts to help improve the quality of early learning opportunities for children age birth through five.
